DEAR CBS:
Don't tread on my love of Jericho. Don't forget I'm here and I'm tuning in.
Count me.... and count on me!!!!!!!!!!!
Count on me to watch on tv sure.
But.....
Count on me more:
to watch online to watch onDemand, and to download your show from iTunes or Amazon
because that is where I'm watching my TV, like millions of others.
I'm a TV independent and I'm damn proud of it.
Don't tread on us your loyal viewers.
Don't ignore our passion and potential.
Don't relegate us to the standards of the past, when the industry is on the precipice of tomorrow.
With "Jericho" you succeeded where your competitors frequently fail - you brought viewers back to network television. You did that by taking a chance on a little show that was different and offered more than the usual fare of recycled drama plots, or mindless game shows and reality tv.
But what you brought back was a new viewer, the viewer of tomorrow.
We are free and independent.
We watch TV on our terms; when and where it is convenient on our schedules.
We are not slaves to a clock or even to the platform on which we watch.
Yes! We think Jericho is valuable and worthwhile television, but we have other obligations too. Despite those other commitments - we do tune in. We just don?t have Nielsen boxes (hey neither do a lot of people) and we watch when and where TV fits into our schedule.
Don't count us out.
Don't overlook our potential as consumers of both your product and that of your advertisers.
Jericho is one of your best performing shows on DVR/Tivo, xBox, innerTube, and various other alternative platforms.
Your own executives have stated that you can get more revenue from your online offerings than your broadcast ones. Why pass up this lucrative opportunity.
Your competition is already looking beyond the Nielsen box and ditching the sweeps methodology.
Rather than dismissing us by the standards of yesterday - look to the future.
For years you have struggled to redefine yourself as the network of a younger audience. You are finally succeeding in that with Jericho. But the younger audience doesn't tune in to broadcast television - especially on CBS. They are online. A quick survey of almost 2500 myspace users that clearly identify themselves as Jericho fans shows the average age of these viewers is 28.5. Well done!!!!
Now don't throw it all away.
We challenge you to truly work with us, the "Jericho" fans, to make CBS a leader in new media and alternate platform delivery. In us, you have an established audience in new media / platforms. Why start again having to build to this level all over?
Embrace Jericho and its free and independent fans, and let it and us be your springboard of rebellion. Cast off the shackles of Nielsen and step into the light of a new day.
Because if you pass up this ready-made opportunity - you will surely lose this dedicated fanbase, and probably be destine to be a follower into the future of television.
